Woman delivers baby weighing 6.3kgs, 2nd heaviest in Kenya's history

- The 35-year-old mother of six gave birth to the baby weighing 6.3kg through caesarean section

- Her fifth born was also born with an almost similar weight at 6kg

- The mother and newborn are reportedly in good condition and will be leaving the hospital soon

- Nurses however warned the mother might be suffering from diabetes thus the weight of the baby

Nurses and patients at Alupe hospital in Teso South Busia County were on Wednesday, August 22, left in shock after a 35-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy weighing 6.3 kilogrammes.

The woman from Ong'ariama village and a mother of six children gave birth to the now second heaviest baby through cesarean section at the medical facility.

Everlyne Atieno Osinya publicly expressed her joy after giving birth and narrated she did not face any problem during the entire pregnancy period.



"This is my second child that I have given birth to through the CS section, with the fifth born who was delivered weighing 6Kgs is now two years old and doing well," she narrated.

Alupe hospital nursing officer in charge, Faith Atieno, revealed that the child was in good condition after they left the operation room.

"The mother and the new born baby are all in good condition and we are still monitoring them before allowing them to go home, this is the first heaviest child to be born in this health facility," she said.

However, Atieno stated for the child to be born with such weight, chances are that the mother might be suffering from diabetes.

She added that can as well affect the child and therefore, they are being given special preference.


Osinya's baby boy became the second heaviest baby in the country after Mervin Mango, also from Busia gave birth to the heaviest baby weighing 7kg in February 2014.

Named after the famous footballer Robin van Persie, his mother wished he grew to be as famous as his namesake who plays for Feyenoord after he left Manchester United football club in England.

An initial report by TUKO.co.ke indicated on Thursday, April 12, another middle-aged mother of three shocked hospital staff when she gave birth to a 6kg baby in Mt Elgon, Bungoma County.

Helen Chepkwemoi Kesis from Kaptama village gave birth to the beautiful baby girl she named Blessing Cherotich through caesarian section at Kapsokwony Sub county hospital.
