Sowore Wants To Debate Buhari, Other Presidential Aspirants

Presidential aspirant of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has expressed the desire to debate President Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other presidential aspirants.

Sowore said this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television programme, Politics Today. He said presidential aspirants should be bold enough to participate in debates about policies and projects they will execute if they become president.

He added that young and new presidential aspirants should also be given the audience and the opportunity to challenge older aspirants through debate.

“If want you to be more serious, you should be bringing these presidential candidates to debate us. Buhari should be brought out. The media should force them out of their hiding. Let them come and debate the future of Nigeria,” he said.

He argued that contrary to claims, young people have come up with alternatives to the current leaders.

“These alternatives will kick out the old guards in 2019,” Sowore declared.

He stressed that younger presidential aspirants are the viable alternative to President Buhari and are capable of doing much more in directing affairs of the nation if elected.

“The alternative is here, that is what we should be debating. We should be talking about the fresh ideas that we are bringing on the table.

“In Nigeria, when we have people like us who have capacity, character, and integrity. We’ve got stamina, intellect, history, and pedigree.

“Young people are here to take their country to the next level of prosperity. We want to say goodbye to poverty, incompetence and lackluster kind of leadership that we’ve had in Nigeria,” he said.

Sowore claimed that President Buhari is not willing to speak at a presidential debate because he “is hiding under one finger and by the time you take him out, it will be very obvious that they are no longer capable.”

Also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Sowore is the founder of AAC, one of the new political parties recently registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Akwa Ibom PDP urges security agencies to investigate Akpabio over inciting comment

Akpabio

• Police commissioner warns against overheating polity
The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on security agencies to investigate alleged threat of ‘war’ declared on the state by former Minority Senate Leader, God’swill Akpabio ahead of the 2019 elections.

Publicity Secretary of the party, Ini Emembong, made the call in a statement in Uyo yesterday, saying Akpabio made the comment during the burial of his wife’s late grandmother in Enugu.

According to him, Akpabio told his audience that: “In 2019, Warsaw shall see war and war shall see Warsaw. The 2019 elections will be a full-scale war and my party-the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win.”

He also alleged that Akpabio, a former governor of the state, who recently defected to APC, vowed to use any known or unknown forces to take over the state in 2019.

“Security agencies should investigate a statement of such magnitude. They should invite the former governor for questioning and explanation of his comments.

“Also, if the state witnesses any violence between September 2018 and in the months preceding the elections, Akpabio should be held responsible,” the statement reads.

Emembong added that the PDP has ruled the state since 1999 and under Governor Udom Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom does not encourage and will not subscribe to violence under any guise.

The PDP also accused the APC of always insisting that Akwa Ibom will be captured in 2019 using federal might, stressing that the party and the people of the state view Akpabio’s comments as a confirmation of APC’s war disposition against the state.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police (CP), Adeyemi Ogunyemilusi, has warned politicians against overheating the state polity due to electioneering activities ahead of the 2019 polls.

He, however, denied allegation that suspected gunmen attacked Akpabio’s residence and disrupted a political meeting on Tuesday.

He confirmed that the meeting lasted till the early hours of yesterday amid tight security following gun scare close to Akpabio’s residence at Ukana Ikot Ntuen in Essien Udim Local Council of the state.

The CP said although there was exchange of gunshots by security officials at the meeting, six hoodlums on two motorcycles invaded a filling station near Akpabio’s house, robbing customers and the pump attendants of the day’s sales.

Corroborating the report, Anietie Ekong, Media Aide to Akpabio, confirmed the shooting, saying: “The Police arrived early to put the situation under control.”

Stop shedding blood during elections, Ooni warns politicians

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has advised politicians in the country against violence and bloodletting as preparations for the 2019 general election begin to gather momentum.

According to a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Wednesday, Oba Ogunwusi gave this advice at his palace on Tuesday.

Oba Ogunwusi, who is Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, spoke while receiving hundreds of Muslims led by the Chief Imam of Ife land, Alhaji Abdulsemiu AbdulHammed, who had on their way from the praying ground visited the palace to pray for the monarch.

The monarch, who later joined Muslims to pray at the praying ground to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir, also advised politicians in Osun State against violence as political parties prepare for the September 22 governorship election in the state.

He said the nation had lost so many promising persons to electoral violence while admonishing politicians to be law-abiding and shun violence in order to show to the world that Nigeria was ripe for democratic rule.

He said, “The spirit of brotherhood being displayed by the faithful on a day like this is very laudable. At the Eid praying ground today, I saw politicians of opposing parties sitting side by side with one another relating together as brothers of the same womb in celebrating the Eid-el-Kabir, which we Yoruba people call Ileya festival.

“I urge our politicians to apply this brotherhood when they get to the field of politics because that will help us in witnessing violence-free elections always.

“I want to also advise Nigerian politicians and party supporters to refrain from promoting violence during the forthcoming elections because there is no gain in violence. Nobody’s blood should be shed on account of elections.

He also appealed to the youths to be conscious of their future and shun politicians who use them for violence to the detriment of their future.

He sued for peace and admonished all Nigerians to jointly work for the development and progress of the country.

The Chief Imam of Ife, AbdulHammed called on Muslims to emulate the virtues of Prophet Muhammed and do everything to ensure peace and progress to reign supreme in the country.

Woman delivers baby weighing 6.3kgs, 2nd heaviest in Kenya's history

- The 35-year-old mother of six gave birth to the baby weighing 6.3kg through caesarean section

- Her fifth born was also born with an almost similar weight at 6kg

- The mother and newborn are reportedly in good condition and will be leaving the hospital soon

- Nurses however warned the mother might be suffering from diabetes thus the weight of the baby

Nurses and patients at Alupe hospital in Teso South Busia County were on Wednesday, August 22, left in shock after a 35-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy weighing 6.3 kilogrammes.

The woman from Ong'ariama village and a mother of six children gave birth to the now second heaviest baby through cesarean section at the medical facility.

Everlyne Atieno Osinya publicly expressed her joy after giving birth and narrated she did not face any problem during the entire pregnancy period.

"This is my second child that I have given birth to through the CS section, with the fifth born who was delivered weighing 6Kgs is now two years old and doing well," she narrated.

Alupe hospital nursing officer in charge, Faith Atieno, revealed that the child was in good condition after they left the operation room.

"The mother and the new born baby are all in good condition and we are still monitoring them before allowing them to go home, this is the first heaviest child to be born in this health facility," she said.

However, Atieno stated for the child to be born with such weight, chances are that the mother might be suffering from diabetes.

She added that can as well affect the child and therefore, they are being given special preference.

Osinya's baby boy became the second heaviest baby in the country after Mervin Mango, also from Busia gave birth to the heaviest baby weighing 7kg in February 2014.

Named after the famous footballer Robin van Persie, his mother wished he grew to be as famous as his namesake who plays for Feyenoord after he left Manchester United football club in England.

An initial report by TUKO.co.ke indicated on Thursday, April 12, another middle-aged mother of three shocked hospital staff when she gave birth to a 6kg baby in Mt Elgon, Bungoma County.

Helen Chepkwemoi Kesis from Kaptama village gave birth to the beautiful baby girl she named Blessing Cherotich through caesarian section at Kapsokwony Sub county hospital.

I will not rest until Nigeria is free from the ravages of corruption - Buhari vows in Sallah message

- As Muslim faithfuls celebrate this year's Sallah, President Buhari has vowed to put an end to corruption in the country

- He called on Nigerians to rise above personal, group, sectarian and other interests

- According to him, selfishness, greed and corruption have no place in our lives and in our dealings

President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with all Nigerians, particularly the Muslim faithful, as they celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir.

In his Sallah message posted on his official Twitter account (@MBuhari) on Tuesday, August 21, the president called on Nigerians to rise above personal interests and promote harmony in the nation.

He also vowed not to rest until the country is free from the ravages of corruption. He said his administration will not relent in its relent in its effort to build and secure a prosperous nation.

Buhari, in a message to Nigerians made available to journalists by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said surrendering to corruption was not an option because it destroyed society and progress of nations.

“Even if some people hate you for fighting corruption, you should not chicken out from the task as a leader because doing so is a betrayal of public trust,” he said.

The president is currently in Daura, Katsina state for the Sallah celebration.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that President Buhari will be celebrating  this year’s Eid-el Kabir with fellow kinsmen in his home town, Daura, Katsina state.

The president on Monday, August 20, left the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 3.06pm.

Some top government officials including his Chief of Staff Abba Kyari, the National Security Officer Babagana Monguno and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha, saw Buhari off as he left for his hometown.

Buhari left shortly after meeting with the nation’s security chiefs during which he directed them to step up their game in order to make the country safer.

Iran Unveils First Domestic Fighter Jet

Iran unveiled its first domestic fighter jet on Tuesday, with President Hassan Rouhani insisting that Tehran’s military strength was only designed to deter enemies and create “lasting peace”.

Images on state television showed Rouhani sitting in the cockpit of the new “Kowsar” fourth-generation fighter at the National Defence Industry exhibition in Tehran.

State media said it had “advanced avionics” and multi-purpose radar, and that it was “100-percent indigenously made” for the first time.

Footage of the Kowsar’s test flights was circulated by various official media.

But live footage of the plane taxiing along a runway at the defence show was cut before it could take off.

“When I speak of our readiness to defend, it means we seek lasting peace. If we lack readiness, we welcome war,” Rouhani said in a televised speech shortly after.

“Some think when we increase our military power, this means we seek war. (But) this is peace-seeking because we don’t want war to happen,” he added.

“If we don’t have a deterrent… it gives a green light for others to enter this country.”

A handout picture released by Iran’s Defence Ministry on August 21, 2018, shows the “Kowsar” domestic fighter jet, a fourth-generation fighter, with “advanced avionics” and multi-purpose radar, which the local Tasnim news agency said was “100-percent indigenously made”.

The plane was first publicly announced on Saturday by Defence Minister Amir Hatami, who had said it would be unveiled on Wednesday.

He gave few details of the project, focusing instead on Iran’s efforts to upgrade its missile defences.

Hatami said the defence programme was motivated by memories of the missile attacks Iran suffered during its eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s, and by repeated threats from Israel and the United States that “all options are on the table” in dealing with the Islamic republic.

“We have learned in the (Iran-Iraq) war that we cannot rely on anyone but ourselves,” he said in a televised interview.

The US has sold hundreds of billions of dollars of weapons to Iran’s regional rivals, but has demanded that Tehran curb its defence programmes, and is in the process of reimposing crippling sanctions in a bid to force its capitulation.

Rouhani said Iran must show restraint as well as deterrence, in an apparent swipe at his hardline opponents who seek to provoke the US with aggressive slogans.

“With a couple of sentences, one can start a fight. With a couple of military moves, one can enter confrontation. But then it will be costly,” he said.

“The skill is to protect the country with minimum cost,” he said

That mirrored a line from the defence minister, who said on Saturday: “Our resources are limited and we are committed to establishing security at a minimum cost.”

Following the withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal in May, Iran has avoided an aggressive response and sought to maintain its goodwill with other international partners who oppose Washington’s move.

Rouhani said US pressure was also a spur to action.

“Why does America impose economic sanctions on us? Why does it impose them on Turkey? Why does it drag China into an economic war? Because it feels each one of them has a weak point. We must fix our weak points.”

Kwankwaso: I Am Better Qualified For PDP’s Presidential Ticket

“Everyone can contest to get the party’s ticket and getting it is one thing, but the most important thing is winning the election. I am better qualified for the ticket," he stated.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former Governor of Kano State and presidential aspirant, has said he is better qualified to secure the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2019 election.

Addressing PDP delegates when he visited Edo State on Monday, he said zoning the slot to the North-West would increase the party’s chance of winning the election.

He said: “If you are selecting a candidate, you have to, under these circumstances, look at the geography, history and population of the country. It is a common knowledge, based on previous census, that Kano State is the most populous state and North-West is the most populous region in the country.

“So, if it is true that our former party is fielding a candidate from the North-West, it is also necessary for the PDP to consider fielding its candidate from the zone. I have no doubt in my mind that the South-South and South-East are very solid in the PDP. I believe that what we will do in the North with what will come out in the South-West, I have no doubt that PDP will be victorious in the 2019 presidential election.

“Everyone can contest to get the party’s ticket and getting it is one thing, but the most important thing is winning the election. I am better qualified for the ticket. I am in the PDP to add value and I believe it is only Kwankwaso that can bring this to table in all the states of the federation.”

“Funke” is the Nollywood movie trying to break gender norms and we are here for it

The mission of Yemi Morafa’s coming-of-age movie Funke is simple: shatter the glass ceiling on gender expectations for women. Set in 1996 Ibadan, the film tells the story of the titular character navigating her way in a patriarchal world enforced by custodians of culture and tradition. Her dreams to become a footballer is, in itself, an oddly refreshing script.

In the teaser, her mother harshly tells her that women belong in the kitchen and there are other jabs like her getting entangled in teen pregnancy. That said, she isn’t deterred. There’s a scene in which she attends a football match and slips into the persona of a coach, yelling out instructions. For a long time now, football has been regarded as a profitable career wherein parents egg on their children to pursue, if they show interest.

But it’s predominantly a landscape occupied by men. And there’s the tendency to trivialise women in the game of football. Even in the current national football terrain, men are rated higher, paid better. Morafa’s Funke is distinguishingly interesting for it’s gender-defying attempt at sports. Starring Jide Kosoko, Segun Arinze, Okey Uzoeshi, Tomilake Alayande, Frank Donga, Ini-Dima Okojie, Efa Iwara, and Eniola Badmus, Funkewill hit select cinemas on September 7. Here’s the trailer below.

Being Successful Is Easier Than You Think! By Erik Meza

My name is Erik Meza, I’m 28 years old and I live in Dakar. A week ago I bought a new Porsche Panamera, as it’s six months since I worked at the car wash and barely had enough to feed my family. Now I’m going to tell you how a casual meeting changed my life and gave me the chance to earn $2000 a day.

I’ll tell you a little about myself. Poverty – that’s how I would describe my whole life. My parents lived in poverty, I never went to university. After finishing school, I went to work at a car wash. When I was young, my salary was sufficient for me. But when I got married and my daughter was born, I started getting into serious financial problems and permanent debt. What to do – I had no idea; the debts were mounting but I couldn’t quit the job because it was my only source of income.

One afternoon a new Porsche Panamera drove into the car wash. A young man stepped out of the car, he looked to be around 23 to 25. I was always amazed how young people could earn so much money. I said to myself quietly: “What do you have to do to drive a car like that?” But he heard me and laughed. “Binary options,” – he said and went away.

Those two words changed my life forever. When I got home, I sat down at the computer and started looking for some mentions of binary options. And so, a month passed: during the day I would work at the car wash, and by night I would read dozens of forums to understand how to use binary options.

Binary options are a revolutionary way of earning in the financial markets, which is very straightforward, quick, and extremely lucrative. You probably know that financial markets are venues where currencies, such as the dollar, the euro, or the pound, are traded 24/7, i.e. with no breaks or days off whatsoever.

What you need to do is just open a free account on a binary options website (a broker website), then make a deposit, select an investment amount and predict where the price (for example, the US dollar exchange rate) will go in a few minutes or hours.

There are only two options available: High or Low. The trade may last for any time from 1 minute to 3 hours (the expiry time), and you may select any time frame in between. If your prediction is correct, your investment amount is nearly doubled; if it is wrong, well, you just lose your investment amount.

So, this will actually be your job if you follow my instructions. This is called 'trading', and a person who works in such a way is called a 'trader'. As a trader, you can work any time wherever you are, all you need is a computer with stable internet connection. As you see, it's pretty straghtforward, even a 10-year-old would understand how it works!

I found the Olymp Trade web page and registered on there for free. They let me open a demo account for $10,000 using virtual money, as well as providing free instructions. This helped me a lot in the beginning, when I still didn’t know how to work with binary options and I didn’t want to invest my own money.

On the Olymp Trade web page, all the calculations are done in US dollars I received the payments in US dollars as well.

After two or three weeks, there was $10,000 in my account. The only problem was that this was only some algorithms on the screen, I couldn’t actually withdraw any cash. That was when I decided to invest $100 in my account. I don’t trust some of the Internet web pages, so I didn’t want to risk too much.

That night I didn’t sleep much – I traded all night, then I went to work. And guess what? That night I earned $153! All day at work, all I could of was binary options. As soon as I got back home, I sat down at the computer, but tiredness got the better of me. That night I didn’t trade much – I earned just $33 and went to sleep. I remember those days well, the only thing that mattered to me was binary options – I would arrive home and start trading right away. After a week, my account had $1220 in it!!! I know, it’s not a huge amount, but this was only the beginning; I didn’t dare trade using large sums of money.

I thought I’d better checkout the web page, so I sent a transfer of all my money ($1220) to a card. An hour later, I received a telephone message saying that the money was in my card! I was happy. After that, I invested $500 in my account and started dealing more boldly. After two weeks I had earned $10,000, and within a month I had left work. After that, I paid of all my debts and for the first time in my life, I took a vacation with my family to rest.

This didn’t stop me trading though, because to earn money, all I needed was a laptop, or a mobile phone with Internet access. When we returned home, I bought myself Porsche Panamera and decided to write this blog just for you – workers like I was, who are fed up of working every day from morning until night, for a measly wage. Remember that life wasn’t given to us for that. Register now, and be sure to complete the instruction course in the demo account without risking losing real money. Nowadays, I don’t see any real way to earn money while sitting at the computer or telephone, except binary options. After buying the Porsche Panamera, there was still $27,183 left over in my account. My goal was to earn $300,000 by the summer and buy a house for my beloved family. Good luck everyone, and thank you for your attention.

Gov Bindow speaks on dumping APC for PDP

Governor Mohammed Bindow of Adamawa State has reacted to reports that he is set to join the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Bindow said the reports making the rounds was ‘false and mischievous’.

His reaction was contained in a statement on Sunday by the State’s Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh.

He said “There is absolutely no truth whatsoever about the said news item.

“It is unfortunate, mischievous and figment of the imagination of whoever is the source of the misinformation.

“For the avoidance of doubt, His Excellency Governor Muhammadu Jibrilla Bindow has neither indicated intention to defect from APC nor entered into any form of discussions with anyone for the purpose of changing party.

“This kind of information is increasingly manifesting as a propaganda tool for opposition in Adamawa State due to the fact that they have lost all means of convincing the electorate to go against the glaring achievements of Governor Bindow which is unparalleled in the history of Adamawa state.”

He said that the state APC-led government was happy that the opposition PDP in the state had realised that Bindow was a performer.

“The PDP has found no candidate with the credentials to defeat Governor Bindow, hence their desire to have him to fly their flag in the 2019 elections.

“That is totally out of question, Governor Bindow is an APC governor; he will remain in APC,” he stated.

Ahmed Musa reveals why Leicester City sold him to Saudi Arabian club

Super Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa, has revealed the reason behind his move to Saudi Arabia side, Al Nassr, from English Premier League outfit Leicester City.

Musa joined the Middle East side in a deal reportedly worth over £18m, shortly after starring for Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Leicester City assured him of a spot in the team this season after his struggles last season, but the forward decided on a big money move to Saudi Arabia, leading to talks about him putting money ahead of his career.

In an interview with OwnGoalNigeria, Musa insisted the final decision was not taken by him.

“I wanted to stay in England because that has been my dream for years but what will you do when you’re told a bid has been accepted for you? I had to move to where I know I will be celebrated.

“Talks have been on about how I moved for the money but nobody has considered the fact that Leicester City also sold me for the money. Transfers can only happen if both parties agree to it and that was my case,” he said.

Ronaldo to play against Fiorentina – Zidane

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will feature for 90 minutes, in their Trofeo Bernabeu game against Fiorentina on Wednesday.

Ronaldo is currently serving a domestic five-match suspension and cannot play until Madrid’s La Liga clash against Real Betis on September 20,

However, the suspension does not affect his participation in Wednesday’s match at the Bernabeu.

Zidane told RMTV that the game was an opportunity for Ronaldo and other players who have not featured so much recently to improve their match fitness.

“It’s an important game for the fans,” Zidane said.

“This year it falls after the first La Liga matchday and we’ll be trying to deliver a good performance, but above all, we’ll be looking to ensure that the players get more playing time under their belts.

“We’re in good shape fitness-wise and there are players like Cristiano Ronaldo who are going to start the game and play the full 90 minutes. We want the trophy to remain here and we’re aiming to put in a good performance.”

Manchester City v Huddersfield: David Silva's baby steals show as City mascot

Manchester City midfielder David Silva marked his 250th Premier League appearance with a stunning free-kick against Huddersfield, but a special guest stole the show before the match kicked off.

The Spaniard carried his eight-month-old son on to the pitch at the Etihad as the teams lined up before City's thumping 6-1 victory.

Mateo, born prematurely in December 2017, spent the first five months of his life in hospital.

In January, Silva said his son was "fighting day by day" after being born at 25 weeks, and in May the youngster was given the all-clear to go home.

Silva said City manager Pep Guardiola's understanding means he will be in "debt forever" to him.

He said: "I want to say thank you to the fans, my team-mates, the staff, club and especially to the manager for understanding my situation. You are a top human being."

Team-mate Benjamin Mendy summed up the heartwarming moment after the match...

The sight - three months later - of a healthy looking baby boy in a City kit was too much for some people on social media.

Police appeal after 93-year-old hospitalised

Photo:

A 93-year-old woman was left requiring hospital treatment after an attempted robbery in Chadderton.

Police have released the images of two men they want to speak to in connection with incident.

The victim was waiting at a bus stop on Turf Lane at 11.55am on Thursday 16 August 2018 when two men attempted to snatch her handbag.

The woman was dragged to the floor, banging her head and leaving her with multiple injuries to her head, knees and hands.

She was taken to hospital for treatment of her injuries and has since been discharged.

The offenders fled empty-handed.

Detective Sergeant Alex Wilkinson of GMP’s Oldham Division said:

This was a violent, cowardly attack on an elderly woman.

It is hard to imagine what kind of individual would target a vulnerable member of the community and leave them with multiple injuries.

This attack could have had much graver consequences. It is only due to the remarkable strength of the victim that she has been able to leave hospital and continue her recovery at home.

We are following numerous lines of enquiry to trace the offenders and I would urge anyone who has information, or recognises the men in these pictures, to contact police immediately.

Perhaps you were in the area at the time and captured dash cam footage that may help us.

The incident occurred at a bus stop served by the number 81 bus and it’s possible that users of this bus may have seen the men in these pictures.

If you can help; don’t hesitate to call us.

– Detective Sergeant Alex Wilkinson

1,500 policemen for Rivers bye-election

The Nigeria Police Force said on Friday that it had deployed 1,500 personnel for Saturday’s (today) bye-election for Port Harcourt Constituency 3 State House of Assembly.

State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zaki Ahmed, who made this disclosure to newsmen in Port Harcourt, also assured that the police would ensure a violence-free exercise.

Recall that the seat became vacant when the immediate past occupier, Victor Ihunwo, resigned, contested and won the June 16, 2018 local government election in the state.

Ihunwo had since been sworn in as the Mayor of Port Harcourt.

The police boss urged residents to cooperate with the security personnel so as to ensure a hitch-free election within the constituency.

“As a command, we have made adequate arrangement for the exercise to ensure that the bye-election is free, fair, credible and devoid of violence.

“Consequently, the command, with the support of other security agencies superintending the election, has agreed that there will be restriction of movement of persons, vehicles on land and water within the areas concerned between 6am and 6pm.

“The restriction of movement is only limited to Miles 1, 2, 3 and 4 with the following description; Abonnema Wharf, Karina Street, Omoku, UST, Ship flyover, Eagle Island and Mile 1 Market,” he said.

He pointed out that entry and exit points to the affected areas would be closed throughout the duration of the bye-election.

Ahmed, however, warned politicians and well placed people in the state not to go to the polling centres with security details.

He appealed to politicians to adhere to the dictates of the Electoral Act by restricting their movements within their voting centres.

Ahmed said, “The police and other security agencies will be monitoring the exercise to ensure that there is due compliance to this directive. Therefore, any person or group of persons in default will be arrested and prosecuted.”

We’ll humiliate Saraki out of office, says Omo-Agege

A prominent member of the Parliamentary Support Group, a body of the All Progressives Congress members in the National Assembly loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has said the APC Caucus is insisting on the reconvening of the National Assembly.

Omo-Agege also pointed out that the APC caucus was also against the alleged proposal for a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives whenever Saraki and Dogara reconvene the National Assembly.

The lawmaker, while speaking to one of our correspondents, insisted that Saraki must not remain Senate President after his defection from the APC to the Peoples Democratic Party.

APC senators had met with the National Chairman of the ruling party, Adams Oshiomhole, during the week on the matter.

Omo-Agege said, “We have the information that they want to reconvene a joint session and that is completely unacceptable to us. Of course, we won’t accept it. The Senate itself has to be reconvened for this purpose. The reason (for postponing the planned recall on Tuesday) is that he knows that we have the numbers now – and indeed we have the numbers now – to remove him. Any opportunity that we have right now, we will get rid of him.

“They have no choice, they have to (reconvene). They are just postponing the evil day. The credibility of the 2019 elections is at stake and it would be a jeopardy if because of Saraki’s selfish interests he refuses to reconvene the Senate towards approving this budget. Saraki must understand that the national interest ought to supersede his personal and selfish interest. He cannot tie down the fate of the entire country just because he wants to hang on a position that we are determined to remove him from.

“We as a caucus are very resolute to remove him and at the slightest opportunity he gives to us, he is gone. We have said that he ought to do the honourable thing, the right thing by stepping down, otherwise he would be humiliated. We have the numbers and we are going to remove him.”

You are threats to democracy, Saraki tells opponents

Saraki, in his response through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, dismissed the humiliation threat, alleging that those calling for his resignation and impeachment were the threats to Nigeria’s democracy.

He said, “We maintain our position that these are dwellers in the gutter and we won’t allow them to drag us into it. No, we won’t allow them to drag us into the gutter. There are some of them who actually should be in jail now because of their conducts. It is because they have state protection that they are not in jail.’’

2019 INEC budget: APC, PDP lawmakers divided along party lines

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and his team of Commissioners in a 2019 General Elections budget defense meeting with the Joint Committee on INEC and Electoral & Political parties matters at the National Assembly

The N189 billion budget proposal submitted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conduct of the 2019 general elections may not be approved by the National Assembly as the debate toes party lines.

Lawmakers are in a dilemma on whether to approve the N189bn or N143bn as differently requested by INEC and President Muhammadu Buhari. This development came to the fore yesterday as arguments before the National Assembly joint committee on INEC took party lines with lawmakers from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) supporting approval of the entire sum of N189billion while their colleagues from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are disposed to the N143bn requested by Buhari in his letter of virement, as the balance of N45.6bn was billed to be appropriated for in the 2019 budget.

This indecision was further deepened with the submission made by the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma who said the lawmakers should exercise their discretion.

Udoma explained that though the N189billion requested for by INEC was the same amount the President wrote in his virement letter but for funding constraints, Buhari decided to seek the approval differently with N143bn for INEC this year while the balance of N45.6billion was anticipated for approval in the 2019 budget.

He said: “If the joint committee wishes to approve the entire N189billion without resulting into increase in the N9.12trillion 2018 budget size, so be it and would be appreciated by the executive.

“Mr. President will have no objection to the National Assembly approving the entire N189billion INEC budget as long as it does not in any way lead to increase in the overall size of the 2018 budget.

“If this is to be done, the N45.6billion the President proposed in his letter to be provided for in the 2019 budget, would also have to be vired along with the N143bn from the N578bn fund appropriated for in the 2018 budget by the National Assembly for the additional 1,403 projects included in the budget”, he averred.

But when grilled on whether he has authorisation from Buhari on his submission, the minister said: “The discretion on which of the requests to be approved is yours. If you approve the N143bn the President requested for, it is okay, and if you approve the entire N189billion for INEC this year, it is also alright.”

“Any of the two is okay for the executive, except that if you approve the N189billion through virement, the N45.6 billion planned to be captured in the 2019 budget would no longer be part of the budget estimates for that year.”

It was on this premise that the lawmakers began to argue along party lines. Some of the PDP lawmakers like Mohammed Hassan (Yobe South), Isa Misau (Bauchi Central), Wole Oke (PDP Osun), Ogbeideihama Omorege (PDP Edo) argued that N143bn requested for by the President should be approved while their APC colleagues like Ibrahim Kurfi (Katsina Central), Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Niger North) Ovie Omo-Agege (Delta Central), Aisha Dukku (APC Gombe) insisted that the entire sum of N189billion should be approved.

Palpably worried, the committee chairman, Suleiman Nazif said, “the essence of inviting the Budget Minister, the Presidential Liaison Officer in the National Assembly, Senator Ita Enang along with INEC officials was to be seen by Nigerians to be transparent, nationalistic and not in any way partisan.“We are not here to play politics with the 2019 election budget. No confusion, no ambiguity on submissions made and requests before us.

“It is our prerogative as a committee to critically look into all the details and recommend either of the two requests for approval by the committee or the whole at both chambers,” he said and accordingly adjourned sine die.

There’s no doubt that Wizkid is behind it all.
