Man charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking his wife with a chainsaw in front of their children



A man was on Monday charged with attempted murder and other charges for allegedly attacking his wife with a chainsaw in front of their three children in Whittier, California.

 

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced that 32-year-old Alejandro Villegas Alvarez has been charged with attempted murder as well as aggravated mayhem, driving or taking a vehicle without consent, hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage and three counts of child abuse.

 

The felony complaint also includes allegations of great bodily injury and personal use of a deadly weapon.

 

According to reports, the attack occurred July 11 in the 7700 block of Milton Avenue in Whittier and the victim suffered traumatic injuries. He reportedly fled the scene in his wife's vehicle following the attack and was involved in a hit-and-run collision before stealing another vehicle, prosecutors said.

The 31-year-old was arrested in Chula Vistathe next day. 

He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Bellflower Branch of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, and prosecutors are asking that bail be set at $1.38 million.

Alvarez faces a maximum possible sentence of life in state prison if convicted.

It was also reported that Alvarez has a record that includes three DUI convictions and has been deported 11 times since 2005.
